I get so excited when the end of October nears, because I know that just around the corner will be Thanksgiving and then Christmas. I love shopping for family and friends, plus I usually also buy gifts for a few people that I don't know. I feel that it is the season to give, and we should give more than usual, even the little things such as our time.

There are some things that have become a tradition in our family. For instance, every year I give my dad aftershave and chocolate covered cherries in addition to his regular gift. It's something that I've done for probably 20 years, and even when I'm not in town to spend the holidays with my family, I still make sure that my dad has his aftershave and chocolate covered cherries. Oh and not just any aftershave will do, it has to be the aftershave that he's been wearing since long before I was born 42 years ago. When you may see other men changing aftershave with the times, not my dad- he says his aftershave is a classic and he only wants that and nothing else. Oh, and it also can't be any other variety of this particular aftershave. Over the years, they've come out with different varieties, and one year I made the mistake of buying him that variation and believe me, it was a mistake. He didn't care for that particular type of aftershave, so he returned it and got his old faithful.

Thinking of those times with my family and the little things like the aftershave and chocolate covered cherries that have become a tradition make me smile. It warms my heart and makes me want to fly home and spend some time with my family that I miss so much, but I'll have to wait a little while. In the meantime, I am starting to plan my Christmas list, plus I'm getting ready to start planning my Thanksgiving menu. Before I know it, we'll be ringing in the New Year. The time flies by so quickly.
